The Wire Series Finale : RIP (2002-2008)
Critically acclaimed TV Drama 'The Wire' officially came to an end today in a 100 minute special, after five seasons spanning over six years.
One thought I gathered from the final montage of scenes, was that after all the arrests, promotions and murders, nothing really has changed. Poverty, drug addicts, drug kingpins, police negligence and other community problems still exist. The Game, is The Game, and Life is the biggest Game of them all.
Highlights were as follows;
- McNulty and Freeman quitting, and escaping the bullet behind the fake 'serial killer'.
- Michael becoming the new stick up kid. Spirit of Omar lives on.
- Bubbles being able to eat with his sister upstairs, symbolizing his full circle of recovery.
- Daniels leaving the force and becoming a lawyer.
- Carcetti becoming Governor
- Dukie becoming a drug addict
- Prezbo's beard
- Chris getting life, and chilling with Wee-Bay inside
- Cheese getting done by Slim Charles
- Marlo walking and selling the connect for 10mil
- Scott Templeton winning a pulitzer for the fictional 'homeless serial killer' story
- Levi escaping getting done for selling confidential court documents , and also his reputation rising after getting Marlo off a multi-million dollar drug conspiracy.
Creator David Simon has said that despite its presentation as a crime drama, the show is "really about the American city, and about how we live together. It's about how institutions have an effect on individuals, and how…whether you're a cop, a longshoreman, a drug dealer, a politician, a judge [or] lawyer, you are ultimately compromised and must contend with whatever institution you've committed to."
Despite the critical acclaim, The Wire has received poor Nielsen Ratings, which Simon attributes to the complexity of the plot, a poor time slot, heavy use of esoteric slang, particularly among the gangster characters and a predominantly black cast. Critics felt the show was testing the attention span of its audience and felt that it was mistimed in the wake of the launch of the successful crime drama The Shield.

Nice Synopsis on The Wire
I have no idea who this pommy Charlie Brooker is, but he does a pretty good job at analysing one of my, if not, favourite television shows; The Wire. He touches on the socio and political issues throughout the series and claims it to be the "best tv series in the past 20 years".
I highly recommend this show to anyone who has not seen it. I got into it through its buzz within the hip hop circles, but I have recently passed it on to a metal head brother and a sports fanatical friend, and the feedback I got back was incredible. My brother even went as far as finishing the first 3 seasons (37 hours of episodes) in under 2 weeks!.
If I had to describe it myself, I would say the following words. Drug Trade meets Police Department, meets Education System, meets the Media, meets City Hall. It is a multi-faceted look at the social and political issues that are prevalent within many American communities. Set in Baltimore, it is complex and character driven. This is no sugar coated bad guys versus good guys type bullshit (insert corny police drama here). After watching a couple seasons, you become sympathetic and empathetic towards most characters. Their fate is unknown, they are simply doing what they know best.
Warning, don't watch this if you have just started watching The Wire as it touches on scenarios from Season 3.
So what are you waiting for? You have 5 Seasons to catch up!

I Am Legend (Alternate Ending)
Quite the opposite indeed. Highly unbelievable. I'm glad they didn't use this ending. Something about Will Smith sacrificing his self for the greater good of mankind, seemed very tragic and heroic at the same time. A noble, brave and thoughtful gesture indeed.

Artist: Jean-Michel Basquiat (1960-1988)
Jean-Michel Basquiat (December 22, 1960, Brooklyn - August 12, 1988, New York, New York) was an American artist. He gained popularity, first as a graffiti artist in New York City, and then as a successful 1980s-era Neo-expressionist artist. Basquiat's paintings continue to influence modern day artists and command high prices.
In 1977, when he was 17, Basquiat and his friend Al Diaz started spray-painting graffiti art on slum buildings in lower Manhattan, adding the infamous signature of "SAMO" or "SAMO shit". The graphics were pithy messages such as "Plush safe he think; SAMO" and "SAMO is an escape clause". In December 1978, the Village Voice published an article about the writings. The SAMO project ended with the epitaph 'SAMO IS DEAD' written on the walls of SoHo buildings.
By 1982, Basquiat was showing regularly alongside Julian Schnabel, David Salle, Francesco Clemente and Enzo Cucchi, thus becoming part of a loose-knit group that art-writers, curators, and collectors would soon be calling the Neo-expressionist movement. He started dating an aspiring and then-unknown performer named Madonna in the fall of 1982. In 1982, Basquiat met Andy Warhol, with whom he collaborated extensively, eventually forging a close, if strained, friendship.
Basquiat died of mixed-drug toxicity (he had been combining cocaine and heroin, known as "speedballing") in his Great Jones Street loft/studio in 1988 several days before what would have been Basquiat's second trip to the Côte d'Ivoire (Ivory Coast, West Africa). After his death, a film biography entitled Basquiat was made, directed by Julian Schnabel, with actor Jeffrey Wright playing Basquiat.
Fun Fact: Basquiat makes an appearance in Blondies' 1980 'Rapture' videoclip.
